Arthur Rosenfeld (Philadelphia, 1952) is the artistic director of Meekers, and has been since the company was founded in the early 1990s. For more than 20 years his unique blend of dance and theater, suited to audiences of all ages, has made him a dominant force in Dutch dance.
His penetrating, contagious humor and straight forward honesty stand out to make his work easily recognizable and easy to identify with.
Arthur was born in Philadelphia and initially trained in dance in New York, but his dance formation is mostly European, starting with an internship with Pina Bausch in 1973, during her first season in Wuppertal. He eventually became a fixture of the Bausch company, finally taking leave of her in 1986, in order to start the company that eventually became Meekers.
That year he joined forces with Ana Teixido and established a tradition of evening length duets for adult audiences that has now extended to some 10 different productions over the course of 20 years.
His first work geared to young audiences, A Damaged Fairytale (1993) was a major breakthrough, and became a source of inspiration for a new generation of dance-makers: high quality, multi-layered, entertaining dance for audiences of all ages.
Arthur has received numerous prizes and citations over the years, recently the Dancers Foundation Merit Award 2006, for the complete body of his work. The jury report gave special emphasis to his often under-recognized influence on the development of dance and innovation in the Netherlands.
